Hooked on Cricket

Hooked on Cricket

On Monday the 19th November, the year 5 & 6 Students had the opportunity to go and play cricket.
We travelled to and from cricket on the bus, travelling with us were children from West Spreydon School.

The cricket was originally meant to be held at North Hagley Park, but there was a change of venue due to the weather forecast and we ended up being at Action Sports in Buchanans Road.

We were provided with lunch, morning tea and bottles of water. For morning tea we got to choose from biscuits or fruit and for Lunch we had Pita Pits.

St. Bernadette's School  and a few other schools were split into groups and the leaders were Canterbury Cricket Professional Cricket players, and they taught us how to play if we didn't already know.

Cricket was really enjoyable and we hope to do it again sometime.

Book Character Day

Book Character Day

Caleb, a Student in our room came up with the idea of having a Book Character Day.
Caleb and Paige were reading a Pixel Raider book and Caleb asked if there was going to be a Book Character Day, so they looked through a website to check but there was none.

Caleb went to ask Mr Norman, and he thought it was a great idea to have a Book Character day so  Room 8 was given blank pieces of paper to make the poster's for Book Character Day.

It was booked in for the Thursday the 15th of November, (a week after camp).

When it was the Book Character Day, everyone was dressed up, and the main winner was Stanley but there were other winners. There was also a Sausage Sizzle on the same day!

Overall it was a fun day and even the teachers dressed up.

*Here are some pictures of Caleb dressed up*

Friday 2 November 2018

In Room 8, we have been learning how to write a persuasive piece of writing. Room 8 is persuading Mr Norman whether or not to move back to our original room or stay in
Room 3. We have written our reasons why we should move back or stay in the room we are currently in.

The structure of a persuasive writing is

  - Title
  - Choose a side or give clear arguments for both sides
  - Strong opening statement
  - Reasons given and evidence to support the reasons
  - Strong conclusion summing up our point of view

We used the hamburger template to brainstorm what we are going to write.
Here are some of our examples of persuasive writing

Moving back to Room 8

Dear Mr Norman,
I strongly believe we should stay in Room 3 for many reasons like
the bad heating or its longer too go for the P.A. and there's more space
in Room 3. Which I will elaborate on further in my argument.

In Room 8 I feel uncomfortable and claustrophobic.
In Room 3 we are neighbouring to the other classrooms in case of classroom
split.

If we are moving from Room 8 our chromebook’s might get wet in the rain.
People with phones can leave through the office to get their phones and you
can growl at us easier.

In Room 3 the printer and photocopier are just around the corner.
We are also closer to first aid and medical equipment.
Furthermore we are closer to the exit.

It is more convenient to stay here this is why personally,
I strongly believe Room 8 as a class should stay in Room 3.

Yours sincerely,

Jimmy

Dear Mr Norman

I strongly believe that we should be allowed to move back to Room 8.
We only moved to Room 3 because of the Church being refurbished but now that
the Church is finished we can move back and are ready to move back to Room 8.

I would like to move back to Room 8 since a lot has happened in Room 3.
For instance arguments and drama, so we could get away from those memories,
and create new ones.

We would feel like part of the senior school since we would be near Room 6 full of
the year 7 and 8 students, It would mean alot to me if we could move to Room 8,
to be with the seniors, since year 6 and up are seniors.

If someone is busting to go to the toilet for any reason, it would be right there for them
to go. If we have been painting we can wash our hands there, instead of walking all
the way to the toilets like what we have to do in Room 3.

It will give us a chance to create new memories and for the other students to remember
their old memories, and I would remember when my sister was there.

In conclusion I firmly believe we should move back to Room 8 so we can create  new
memories to treasure.

Yours sincerely,

Shelby O’Donoghue From Room 8.

Uru Manuka Cultural Festival

Uru Manuka Cultural Festival

The Uru Manuka Cultural Festival is an event where Schools come together to perform and celebrate the different cultures of our School Communities. This year we celebrated the Maori Culture.

On the 24th October, the St. Bernadette's Kapa Haka group performed at the Uru Manuka Cultural Festival for the first time. There were two performances, a Matinee one and an evening performance. The songs we performed consisted of: Kawaita, E Rere Taku Poi with Poi and Utaina. Our cultural leader Whaia Tanya taught us our songs and how to use poi. Mrs Lee accompanied the group playing the guitar.

At the evening session of the festival, there were eight or nine schools that performed, and their efforts were well received by the audience. The audience showed their approval by clapping and loud cheering.

The Uru Manuka Cultural Festival was a success and next year our school hopes to have a school costume that we can wear to perform in. We are looking forward to taking part again.

Refurbished, Repaired, Strengthened and Extended

On the 17th of October we had our first whole school Mass in the reconstructed Church. Our refurbished, repaired, strengthened and extended Church has a new Tabernacle, carpet, walls e.g. the decorated walls with vines leading into the stars. Jesus is the vine grower and we are the stars.

We have one statue of Mary from Rome, one statue of St. Bernadette from France, and a Crucifix from Spain. This helps to make our Church globally connected.
In the old Church we blessed ourselves with Holy Water out of two bowls, but now we bless ourselves out of the Baptismal Font.

The two entrance doors are now made out of glass , the seats have been angled and the projector is now split into two one on each side of the Church.

Everyone is so proud of the refurbished Church and all the detail that has been put in to the Church. We thank all the people who were involved in making Father Paulo's goal come true.

St John, Module: Responding in an Emergency

St Johns

On the 4th of September we were acquainted with Paula Hart. Paula works for St Johns, particularly in Schools. We were very lucky to have learnt about keeping people safe and healthy.

Paula taught us how to do "DRSABCD", Paula also showed us how to deal with cuts. For this she taught us a jingle, it goes like this "Pack it, Wrap it, Raise it".

We did role plays and word puzzles. Paula was a great help to us for medical reasons and keeping ourselves safe in an Emergency. we would like to thank you very much for giving us more knowledge

DRSABCD (Doctor's ABCD) means:

Danger
Response
Send for help
Airway
Breathing

Defribulator

We are practicing the DRSABCD

Kickstart Breakfast

Kickstart Breakfast

Today at St. Bernadette's, we had Tracey Fleming (Relationship Manager) from Kickstart Breakfast and John (Sanitarium Manager) visit our Breakfast Club to see how things were going. We have Breakfast Club running on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at school in Room 7. This is an opportunity for children to have breakfast before school to engage their brains, and it is also a social time where children can converse with other students and adults.

In the photo we can see (aside from Tracey and John), Mr Norman (Principal of St. Bernadette's), Mrs Barnes (volunteers) who help out at Breakfast Club and Karin from Mana Ake.

Here are some comments from children in Room 8 about the Breakfast Club:

"I like the food that they make".
"I like the way Breakfast Club provides food for children who haven't eaten breakfast at home".
"I like the way the Staff who volunteer in Breakfast Club are so welcoming to everyone".
"At Breakfast Club, I like the way the Volunteers are very polite and it is fun to talk to them".
"I like the way we get to choose what we would like to eat".

Tongan Language (Sister Monika)

Tongan Language

At the start of this year, the Year 6 students have been learning Tongan language with Sister Monika.
This takes place when the Year 7 students are at Technology.
Sister Monika has helped us learn some phrases in Tongan and also to respond to phrases spoken in the Tongan language.

Other activities we have been doing include :
- Worksheets translating English to Tongan
- Prayers, songs and dances e.g  Te Iwi e and Si'i lolo

Recently we have begun to learn other languages e.g Te Reo and Samoan.
We would like to thank Sister Monika for preparing the worksheets and tasks for us.

Last week at St. Bernadette's School we had a Red and Black day to support the Crusaders in the Super Rugby Finals. Room 8 made up a song to the tune of the New Zealand National Anthem to show their support for the Crusaders. The Crusaders heard the song and sent back a thank you for our class.

Giving back to the Community

Giving back to the Community

Recently we had the privilege to create puzzle pieces saying welcome in different languages. Some of these languages were: Samoan, Chinese, Filipino, Fijian, English, Tongan, Maori, Indian Punjabi, and Cook Island. We had to do a base coat and then another coat of paint and then we created the words and painted over the puzzle pieces with black. We had to make sure that you could not see the pencil underneath it or we had to do another layer (Term 2). Then when it was all dry our caretaker Henk took them to 126 on the Corner to put up in the hall. After the holidays we went down to 126 on the Corner to go see what they looked like all together (Term 3). The puzzle pieces were in order of the rainbow. The Community were there to celebrate the new look to the hall. They complemented us on the puzzle pieces and said that they looked really good.

Responsibility

Responsibility

Responsibility is our focus for Term 3.
Responsibility means being reliable and trustworthy.

Responsibility is one of our C.E.R.R values. We have four C.E.R.R values Compassion, Excellence , Responsibility and Respect.

We have learnt not only to say what the C.E.R.R. values are about, but to put them into action. One way we are working on showing Responsibility in Term 3 in our classroom is having H.O.L (Hubs of Learning). These Hubs are Liturgical Leaders, Corridor Inspector, P.A. (personal assistant) for our Teacher, Health Team, Class Blog and Whiteboard manager, whereby it is our job to set up rosters and to help things run smoothly in our classroom.

Another way to show Responsibility is by taking responsibility for our own learning and showing excellence in our work.
